What motivates greed in our elected leaders

I have been following the news lately and I find it very disappointing that a number of African people in elected power seem to have one thing in common, corruption claims & accusations. This is very saddening since the reasons these people get into power in the first place is because they promise to bring positive change and make the lives of average citizens bearable by implementing policies that cater for all citizens equally. Examples can be found as closer to home as our own country. I will give you two famous cases that we are mostly familiar with.

The case of the South African President being accused of being involved in the arms deal for which he famously stated "corruption charges (against him) should be dropped because corruption is a western thing" and the recent upgrades done at his Nkandla homestead said to be financed using tax payers' money unlawfully. He is also to be connected with some of the biggest players when it comes to riches, people such as the rich Gupta family, that famously landed their private jet at the Waterkloof Military airbase in 2013.

Another is the case of new party EFF's Commander In Chief, Julius Malema. With charges ranging from defrauding SARS and now recently being accused of spending the party's money to finance his lavish lifestyle. You will remember that when the EFF first went to parliament, they refused to accept MP privileges such as free catered for meals stating that people who work should buy lunch out of their own pockets yet it seems they have given up on trying to fight this, it goes against the original promise that they are in parliament to fight unjust MP privileges while the man in the street struggles to put food on a plate on a daily basis.

From the two examples, you see the men who are put in a place of power and instead of serving the nation, they tend to empower and enrich their own pockets and; if you will; make the correct contacts instead of serving the people who voted for them in hopes of having their poverty alleviated and having the campaign promises realized.

My question regarding all this is, what motivates people in power to suddenly forget their course and choose to be greedy? Is it the fact that a person is taken from having nothing to suddenly having all the possibilities open to them? Is it that a human being's mind is set up in way where one gathers all that they can before thinking of what will be left for the next person?

Help me understand, fellow trolls.
