Family Gatherings

You can't choose your family. If you could you'd probably choose Patrice Motsepe to be your dad or Jessica Nkosi to be your sister. You can’t change the one you have, either. We’ve all tried to.

Family. We all have one. Family is globally known as the entity of people whose sole reason of existence is to annoy you. No matter in what country you  live, your family is right there beside you and trying to drive you crazy.

Let’s talk about family get togethers now that we’ve just recovered from Christmas Holidays and approaching Easter. Here's a discussion guaranteed to make yours better by comparison:

My family does not have one disruptive, dysfunctional, spoiled, bullying person.

We have entire households full of them. Let me start with my husband’s family

My sister in-laws kids neh, with only two exceptions, every single little boy in that family is a brat. Spoiled beyond belief, catered to and thoroughly believing they are a special little snowflake who can do no wrong. Every gathering, they roll out their priciest toy, and blithely and completely refuse to share. Ever. They get angry and yell when made to, bully other children into sharing and hit them when they refuse.

That's just the boys. The 3 girls are all just above toddler, but all far enough apart to have been the "baby girl" at one point. All have to be the centre of attention. All night. For everyone. They dance in front of the television, caper across the floor beneath paper plates and open top cups without a care for watching where they go, and have never, ever even heard the word "Interrupt" less have any understanding of its meaning.

Of course, that's just my husband’s side.

My 28 year old sister is lazy beyond belief. Dropped out of school with 3 months to go. Yes, she could have had her diploma in 3 months. Just 90 days. And she quit. She cannot hold a job for more than 3 months when she can get one at all. And my Mom enables all this, claiming it’s not her fault, she can’t help being bored with school (3 months before graduation) and she didn’t deserve to have to stay there if she didn’t want. She can do no wrong in my Mother's muddled mind.

And my uncle who always looks like he wants to murder someone. That one is always sharpening knives while everyone else is drinking and having a good time. He once asked me if he can visit me and I stay 600km away from home. How do you think that discussion went, seeing as I am still alive and was not shot (in what would have been perhaps the most open and shut case of "Justifiable Homicide" ever, had he visited me).

My brother's kids are entirely and completely dysfunctional. Not their fault. Abusive mother whom my brother has divorced. Also, she turned out to be a slut, and that's where money from his 23 years of government service went. All of it. The money, I mean - so they have nothing. And his kids are just learning to be human - sadly, I mean that literally - at the ages of about 3, 8 and 9, respectively.

I don't stay long at family gatherings. On either side. And we make a point of never, ever even trying for combined gatherings. Ever. For obvious reasons.

So, how are your family get togethers, again?

Guess Who???

So last week we came up with new blog features. So this is the first one. We came up with some questions to ask a regular blogger, and here goes...

Initials: SJ

Year of birth: 1983

Describe yourself in 3 words?
Remarkably loving person

How would you say your upbringing has moulded you to what you have become right now?
My upbringing has taught me the value of family, like when everything else is lost, we have our family to turn to. That’s me in a nutshell, my life, my world starts and ends with those that I love. I carry this with me everywhere.
If you could change anything in your past, present, or the future, what would that be?
I’m naïve, so I have lost money in the most silliest of ways, that’s what I would change.

What is your favorite body part?
Hands

If money was no object, what would you do all day?
I’d spend the day at the mall with a different person each day or alone some days, shopping, watching people and drinking coffee or tea or creamsoda J

Biggest Regret?
Running away from Geography Information Systems degree and doing Communications instead L

Worst fear?
Finding out I or one of my family members has a terminal disease like Cancer or something.

Blogger you wouldn’t mind being stuck in a lift with?
Thicknqo

Celeb you would love to bonk all day? Gxabhashe – the guy that acts on Uzalo SABC1 830pm. You dotis don’t watch Welfare tv?

Pet peeve?
People who smoke when there are kids/babies close to them.

What story does your family always tell about you?
My Dad and aunt always talk about me having answers for everything as if I had known beforehand that should they say this, my answer will be this. So they have incidents that support this all the time.

What do you miss most about being a kid?
Not worrying about monthly payments!

Does your Man have a headboard or ottoman?
He has a headboard yes, but no ottoman L

Biggest lesson in life?
Love them all but don’t trust them all.

Best Thing about being part of the Tolah Family?
You keep me entertained, I have discovered my crazy self with you lot and I love how we help each other in all matters of life. We pray (12 and 3) together, cry, laugh, get moist and build each other up. We are a virtual cyber family that keeps ourselves entertained. And we are a BIG family, the cherry on top!

P.S. We wont reveal the blogger :)

Can time stand still

With each breathe it grows, a pain so cruel, I find it easier to let my lungs rest, for with each breathe I die a little inside. Bit by bit pieces of me disappear,  I have died over and over yet it still lives inside, I am impregnated with pain, giving birth to hell.

Life has a way of throwing one in the deep end when we least expect, for me I was kicked into it a week before my birthday, a normal Saturday turned into what would be the turning point of my Life. I was broken, shattered and I felt parts of me I never knew existed , the Sunday that followed seemed too short. But yet Monday morning I had to wake up and put on my best foot forward and work.

Deadlines awaited me and reports had to be sent out, my life had somehow stopped but everything around me continued as if I never mattered, as if my pain was nothing, as if my broken world was but a mere drop in an ocean. I wanted a Pause button, for time to stand still so I could feel my pain, so I could find some way to carry on but you see not matter how broken you are, no matter what life throws at us, we are expected to carry on. Dragging heavy hearts with us to work, trying to conceal swollen eyes, barely able to hold your tears back with every thought you have and hanging to every bit of strength you have left.

In this life we are expected to feel and deal with our problems on a schedule, from 8-5 you are meant to forget that right now your life may be a mess. How are we expected to do all this we are just merely humans?

How Could They Pet That: Unconventional Pets

A man's best friend, trusted companion and to some, valuable accessories. Pets come in variable and even what a person like me considers bizarre forms. To most of us, when a person mentions a pet we automatically think cats & dogs and occasionally there would be a home with doves in the hood so yeah.... So imagine my first thoughts when I first became aware that these creatures were; to some; pets.

Snakes: Where I grew up, if you saw a snake you killed it. Therefore, they were very scarce and if one ever entered someone's yard there would be a serious witch hunt to try figure out who sent it. So it goes without saying that a person who would dare have a snake as a pet was considered to have some sort of witchery. Now that I no longer stay in a village, I think differently, yet I still am not willing to house a snake. I am not ready to be a python's snack.
This must be a "cheese boy tortoise"

Tortoise: Lol, we generally avoided these things. We never bothered them and they didn't seem to notice us. What  I knew as a child was it was the slowest animal in the world according to folk's tales. SO when my one suburban aunt came to stay with us and she made a shelter and then fetched 3 tortoises to come dwell in the shelter, you can guess how us kids thought she was a displaced witch. We had never thought of such, she even fed them grass. We had no idea those things ate.
Those who own them, love them!

Chickens: *sigh*. Poultry has been a part of my life growing up, but it never had names. They were all collectively referred to as chickens and were all being bred for days when we had visitors so one can be slaughtered. One day when I came to visit Jozi I was introduced to "Spike". To my amazement, Spike was as big as my brother's size 7 shoes. Moreover, Spike was a Chicken. I couldn't wait to tell people when I got back to the village and of course everyone thought I told fabulous tales. I was scolded for upsetting my non-black "new friend" by asking if we are gonna have him for supper since he was the only chicken I saw in the yard so I had figured he was food.

Hamsters: A hamster is a rodent. Rodents to me are all the same (ignorant yes, but heeeeey) and I don't see me babying a rat. Even going as far as buying it toys. TOYS!!!! FOR A RAT???? No, man. Miss me on that Ntashi.

Not only are these pets unusual to have in the house, they are also costly. For example, if you are to have a pet snake you will need to have a specialised aquarium, heating equipment and most probably its own "room or wing" in the house. There is also the food. Unfortunately unlike some pets (I won't mention, SPCA might be in these streets), you cannot simply just feed these pets last night's leftovers.

The medical costs are also not cheap. When I had a cat, I was told it will cost me at least R900.00 just to have to have it spayed. I am not even gonna start with the amount I had to spend on toys. Toys that she would hide after being bored with them and I would have to find more creative items for her to play with. Now imagine said pet is a snake, what toys do snakes even get to play with?

These are just a few of what I find unusual pets based on what I grew up seeing. I won't even touch on the exotic creatures.

I know we slay on every level here. So, what are you petting on your couch?
